In mygarage, I have open framing, where each rafter is a 2×10 and spaced about 3 feet apart. I want to add plywood sheathing to top of the rafters to create a storage area and a drop down ladder. My concern though is that the rafters are about 3 feet apart. Each rafter is about 26 feet long. Can someone give me detailed explaination on how they would go about making sure the rafters support enought weight? If I need to add rafters, should I use engineered wood? I have searched and searched for ideas on the net to no avail. I need some help! Thanx!

i assume that your rafters are actually trusses. .engineered trusses are very strong and can SUPPORT a lot of Weight. homemade trusses are not as strong.
it could be dangerous to take advice from someone that hasn’t seen exact dimensions of your trusses. since we cant see what kind of truss system you have, go to your local lumber supply with a detailed drawing of your truss system and ask to speak with their structural engineer (or go straight to a truss building company) and they should be able to tell you what kind of Weight your trusses will be able to handle.
